Prince Philip walks into St George’s Chapel unaided despite hip replacement last month

After having hip surgery last month, 96-year-old Prince Philip is able to attend the wedding of his grandson, Prince Harry to Meghan Markle this afternoon at St George’s Chapel at Windsor Castle. The Prince just arrived alongside Her Majesty The Queen at the Galilee Porch. They were received by the Dean of Windsor who presented the Canons of Windsor and the Archbishop of Canterbury to Her Majesty and His Royal Highness.

There was uncertainty in the press as to whether or not the Duke of Edinburgh would be able to attend the nuptials. However, yesterday the press got its answer. He would be there to watch his grandson marry.

It is not known if the Prince will attend either of the receptions – the one directly after the ceremony at St George’s Hall or the later evening one at Frogmore House. A palace insider told The Express that he would not attend either as he is still recovering and would not be able to attend all the events due to health reasons.

Philip had hip replacement surgery in central London’s King Edward VII Hospital on 4 April causing him to miss Maundy Thursday and Easter Sunday services. He left hospital over a week later on 13 April.

After the procedure, palace officials had said that he would attend the wedding if he was well enough.

Last weekend, His Royal Highness was seen in public for the first time since his surgery. He was spotted behind the wheel of his vehicle chatting to The Queen at the Windsor Horse Show leading many to believe it was a positive sign for his attendance today.

The hardworking royal retired from royal duties in August of last year after several decades of dedicated service to Her Majesty and the country. He said that he was no longer able “to stand up much.” Over his time partaking in royal events, he attended close to 22,000 solo engagements before his retirement.

He will turn 97-years-old on 10 June.
