Communities across the UK and the Commonwealth have already put plans in place to join in one of the oldest traditions associated with major royal events.
On the evening of June 2nd 2022, the first full day of the Platinum Jubilee weekend, people are being invited to light beacons to mark the 70th anniversary of The Queen’s reign.
It’s now been revealed that over 1,500 places have already said they will be lighting beacons for the event.
The main lighting will take place at Buckingham Palace beginning a chain of illumination that will spread for thousands of miles.
Towns, villages and cities in the UK, the Channel Islands, the Isle of Man and the Commonwealth will take part. Ahead of the lighting of the beacons, town criers are invited to proclaim the lighting at 2pm their time. At 9.35pm, pipers and pipe bands will play Dui Regnare to signal the lighting and to pay tribute to The Queen. At 9.40pm, buglers will herald the approach of the traditional beacons before the flames are lit at 9.45pm local time.
Information about registering to light a beacon or be a piper or bugler is available on the special website.
Beacons have been lit for centuries to mark major royal events including weddings, coronations and jubilees.
