A record number of cities have been created to mark the Platinum Jubilee.
Three places in England, one in Scotland, one in Wales, one on the Isle of Man and one in Northern Ireland have been selected. For the first time ever, a location outside the UK will also be made a city with that honour going to Stanley in the Falkland Islands.
The new city of Stanley will be joined by Doncaster, Colchester and Milton Keynes in England in being elevated to mark the Platinum Jubilee.
The honour also goes to Dunfermline in Scotland, Wrexham in Wales and Bangor in Northern Ireland. Douglas on the Isle of Man is also made a city.
Announcing the winners, Steve Barclay, Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster said ‘‘As we celebrate Her Majesty The Queen’s colossal contribution to society, I am thrilled that we are able to recognise some of the many places that make Britain great. It is also incredibly reflective of Her Majesty’s global outlook and years of international service that applicants from the Overseas Territories and Crown Dependencies have been selected as winners for the first time.”
The Culture Secretary, Nadine Dorries, said ”“City Status is a huge accolade and I congratulate our eight brilliant winners. This competition showcases the best of Britain and the Overseas Territories and will act as a lasting legacy of Her Majesty The Queen’s Platinum Jubilee.”
As well as creating eight new cities, the competition marking the Jubilee has bestowed the honour of Lord Mayoralty status on Southampton. It means the city can now have a Lord Mayor.
City status has traditionally been granted to mark Jubilees.
