Queen Sonja of Norway undergoes successful heart operation

Queen Sonja of Norway is resting after undergoing a successful heart operation.

The Norwegian queen, who is 87, had a pacemaker fitted.

The procedure was carried out at the Rigshospitalet in Oslo on January 16th 2025.

Soon afterwards, Norway’s royal court said the operation had been a success and that Queen Sonja was doing well. She’s expected to remain in hospital for a day or two before returning home to the Royal Palace in Oslo.

Doctors decided to insert a pacemaker after Queen Sonja had to be taken to hospital several days earlier when her heartbeat increased rapidly during a ski-ing trip. She was already being treated for atrial fibrillation. Queen Sonja was released from that hospital stay after an overnight assessment before returning days later for the pacemaker.

Queen Sonja’s husband, King Harald, also 87, had a pacemaker fitted last year.
