King Frederik and Queen Mary start Paris Olympics with romantic selfie

King Frederik and Queen Mary have shared a fun selfie from the Opening Ceremonies of Paris 2024. 

The Danish King and Queen are in the French capital for the 2024 Summer Olympic Games and had a prime spot to view the Opening Ceremonies. They shared a selfie on Instagram with the Eiffel Tower in the background from their seats.

And they took their photo at just the right moment – soon after the ceremony began, heavy rain started to fall across Paris. While many VIPs had to reach for the plastic ponchos provided, practical Queen Mary had come prepared with a stylish raincoat.

The Opening Ceremony on Friday was the first ever to take place outside of a stadium. Athletes travelled down the river Seine in boats as they carried their flags for their countries. Performers and athletes were dancing and BMX-ing along the sides of the river, carrying out twelve different tableaus throughout.

Denmark has sent 123 athletes to the Paris Olympic Games to compete in twenty different competitions. King Frederik and Queen Mary met with athletes on Thursday and Friday to wish them luck in their events.

Just before the opening ceremony got under way, they joined other guests at a special reception held by President Emmanuel Macron and France’s first lady, Brigitte Macron.

Frederik and Mary have a special history with the Olympics, as they met at the 2000 Olympic Summer Games held in Sydney. 

They shared a message on Instagram with their selfie, ”Friendship, solidarity and fair play are the foundations of the Olympic spirit, which in the coming weeks gather nations from across the globe for the world’s largest sporting and sporting event,” they wrote in the caption of the post.

The strong community felt at the Olympic Games has always meant something special to both of us, just as experiencing the Olympic atmosphere together again evokes wonderful memories.

They joined the King and Queen of the Belgians, the King and Queen of the Netherlands and the King and Queen of Spain as well as the Grand Duke and Duchess of Luxembourg and Prince Albert and Princess Charlene of Monaco to watch the ceremony which ended with Celine Dion singing from the Eiffel Tower.
