Friendship dominates on day one of State Visit from Japan

Emperor Naruhito and Empress Masako arrived in London to begin Japan’s State Visit to the United Kingdom and it was all smiles.

The Prince of Wales greeted the Emperor and Empress at their hotel to formally begin the visit; the heir to the throne will often first welcome visitors during State Visits. Prince William then rode in a carriage with the couple to Horse Guards Parade in Whitehall, where all three looked to enjoy their meeting.

King Charles and Queen Camilla officially welcomed the Emperor and Empress with a ceremony at Horse Guards Parade. King Charles and Emperor Naruhito inspected the royal guards together.

The King, Queen, Emperor, and Empress then travelled by carriage to Buckingham Palace. Thankfully the weather cooperated and they were able to enjoy bright sunshine for their journey.

The royal couples exchanged gifts. King Charles and Queen Camilla gifted a pair of silver and gold beakers, as well as a bottle of Glen Garioch whisky and a handmade fan, while the Emperor and Empress gave their hosts a framed photo of themselves, a black lacquerware box and a brocade handbag.

They also spent time looking at several Japanese items from the Royal Collection displayed for the visit.

In the evening, The King and Queen hosted the Japanese Imperial couple at a State Banquet at Buckingham Palace.
