Prince William is to host Buckingham Palace’s first football match to celebrate the Football Association’s 150th birthday.
The Duke of Cambridge, president of the FA, is planning to use the Queen’s back lawns for the match which will see the Civil Service FC and Polytechnic FC go head to head at the Palace on October 7.

“In our 150th year, it is hugely important for The FA to honour the efforts of many thousands of volunteers who week in, week out, help to provide the opportunity for millions more people to enjoy football at grassroots level,” the Duke explained.
“Inviting 150 of these volunteers to Buckingham Palace provides a fitting way for The FA to pay tribute and give thanks.”
The match, which has been approved by the Queen, was seen as a great way for the FA to celebrate its long history
Prince William became the President of the FA in 2006, replacing his uncle Prince Andrew who gave up his role the year before. He has been seen playing football for Castle Rising FC while on holiday at Sandringham last Christmas as well as being seen playing football with his brother, Prince Harry, while in Lesotho during their first joint overseas engagement in 2010.
The Prince, who recently became a father to Prince George, has also been seen playing football in Battersea Park, notably, the evening before his wedding and when he came back from honeymoon.
In a speech while addressing children at a leisure centre, William quipped that he believes he plays football ‘like a giraffe on ice’.
Prince William is known to support Aston Villa, due to the fact it was the team he was taken to see at their home ground, Villa Park. He has also been seen at many England international and home nation matches during his time as President of the FA.
