Theresa May to stay on as Prime Minister as she survives vote of no confidence

Theresa May will remain Prime Minister and leader of the Conservative Party after she survived a vote of no confidence amongst Tory MPs.

Prime Minister Theresa May won a confidence vote with 200 out of 317 Tory MPs supporting her to stay on as leader.

However, crucially 117 members of her own party said they had no confidence in her, meaning the matter is not fully resolved.

Despite winning the vote, MP Jacob Rees-Mogg has called on the Prime Minister to “urgently” tender her resignation to The Queen.

Speaking immediately after the result of the vote was declared, the Tory Brexiteer said: “The Prime Minister must realise that under all constitutional norms she ought to go and see The Queen urgently and resign.”

The Queen will be watching events carefully from Buckingham Palace.
