Canada’s new PM looking to meeting with King Charles

King Charles could soon be welcoming a new Prime Minister to one of his royal residences.

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney was sworn into his office on 15 March and is reported to be heading to the UK for an important meeting.

Carney and his recently announced cabinet of ministers visited Rideau Hall on Friday where Governor General of Canada Mary Simon swore in the new government.

The new Prime Minister’s office has already announced that Carney will be travelling this week to officially represent Canada.

Instead of the traditional first foreign trip to the United States, Carney will be in France to meet with President Emmanuel Macron to discuss the Canada-European Union Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement and possible further developments in commerce and defence.

The Canadian Prime Minister will then be heading to the United Kingdom where he will meet with UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer to discuss trade, AI, and commerce between the two nations.

Carney is also reported to be meeting with King Charles while in the UK, his first official audience with the Canadian monarch. The meeting comes only a couple of weeks after Justin Trudeau meet with Charles while still in office.

Carney has strong ties to the United Kingdom, as he completed his DPhil at Oxford University and served as Governor of the Bank of England from 2013 to 2020.
