Princess Astrid of Norway has one of the most unique tiaras in the Norwegian Royal Family and it actually belonged first to a beloved British Queen.
Princess Astrid, Mrs. Ferner often wears Queen Alexandra’s Turquoise Circlet. Queen Alexandra most likely received the turquoise and diamond tiara as a gift from her husband, King Edward VII, for her 58th birthday in 1902.
This tiara features several diamond prongs with turquoise stones set in the centre in different shapes.
Princess Astrid often wears the tiara with a matching turquoise necklace and earrings. Notably, these were not originally purchased with the tiara. Princess Louise of Sweden and Norway received these as a gift from her in-laws when she married into the Danish Royal Family.
This tiara has had one of the most interesting journeys. Queen Maud of Norway inherited the tiara from her mother, in 1925, when she died. Maud had brought the tiara back to the United Kingdom with her on her 1938 visit for cleaning when she passed away unexpectedly.Â
The tiara and accompanying pieces were held in Britain during the Second World War, and they were not moved until Crown Prince Olav and Crown Princess Märtha collected them in 1953 after attending Queen Elizabeth II’s coronation.Â
Märtha herself passed away in 1954 and it was not until 1968 that her jewels were divided up amongst her children.
Princess Astrid has worn this tiara ever since. However, she has said it will remain a royal possession and that she has no intention of leaving it to any of her descendants.
