Royalty returns to the Louvre for Olympic Gala

It began life as a royal fortress and became a symbol of a revived French monarchy in the 16th and 17th century and, as the Olympics took over Paris, kings and queens once more reigned at the Louvre.

Several royals mingled at an Olympic gala dinner at the palace turned cultural monument ahead of the official start of the 2024 Summer Olympic Games.

Thomas Bach, the President of the International Olympic Games, and his wife, Claudia Bach, hosted the Olympic Gala at the Louvre on the even of the games. The Monagesque Michelin-star chef Alain Ducasse created a full menu for the 100 guests at the historic site. 

Several different royal families were represented at the dinner.

King Frederik and Queen Mary of Denmark first arrived, with Mary looking in a striking red MaxMara pantsuit. 

King Felipe and Queen Letizia of Spain also appeared early, with Letizia choosing to dress diplomatically in a stunning embroidered Dior gown.

King Philippe and Queen Mathilde of Belgium were in attendance with Mathilde also choosing to wear a jumpsuit but instead in white. 

Prince Albert and Princess Charlene of Monaco were also guests, with Charlene wearing a black Alexander McQueen pantsuit. Prince Albert is currently serving as a member of the International Olympic Committee. 

King Willem-Alexander of the Netherlands was solo on Thursday evening, as Queen Máxima has not yet arrived. However, the Dutch King looked to be having a good evening seated beside Queen Letizia. 

The Louvre Palace originally dates back to the twelfth century and was a residence for the French Royal Family for decades.
