After a tragic fire in April 2019, Notre-Dame de Paris will finally be reopening to visitors.
The Paris cathedral will be officially reopening to the public on 8 December 2024 after five years of intensive restoration work following a fire on 15 April 2019.
There will be two official reopening ceremonies, one on 7 December and 8 December. Although these ceremonies will be invitation only and will not be open to the public, the ceremonies will be televised.
The reopening celebrations will continue throughout the week of 7-15 December with different events, and major concerts on 17 and 18 December. Notre-Dame will be releasing more details throughout November.
There has already been one major development in the cathedral’s journey back- on 9 November the bells of Notre-Dame rang out for the first time in over five years.
The cathedral’s history dates back to the twelfth history and has played host to several significant moments in French history.
In 1537, King James V of Scotland married Madeleine of Valois there and in 1558, Mary, Queen of Scots married Francis, Dauphin of France at the cathedral. Napoleon, the Emperor of France, held his coronation at the historic cathedral in 1804.Â
