Flags at the home of England’s football team, Wembley, will fly at half mast in tribute to Prince Philip, who has died at the age of 99. The same tribute will be made at St. George’s Park.
The national side tweeted ”It’s with immense sadness that we learned of HRH The Duke of Edinburgh’s death earlier today.”
The message also recalled the Prince’s presence at one of the country’s most famous sporting victories, the World Cup Win of 1966 when a beaming Duke watched The Queen present the Jules Rimet trophy to England’s captain, Bobby Moore. It said ”Prince Philip was the FA’s president between 1955 and 1957, and attended a number of #ThreeLions games – including our win over Germany in the 1966 World Cup final.
The Football Association also paid tribute to its former president, saying ”We have sent our deepest condolences to Her Majesty The Queen on the passing of His Royal Highness The Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh. His Royal Highness was President of The FA between 1955 and 1957, although he attended his first final in 1949 and would be a regular presence at the Wembley showpiece into the 1960s. His Royal Highness remained an honorary member of The FA and accompanied HM The Queen for English football’s finest hour: the 1966 FIFA World Cup win at Wembley. He was also present for the final of the 1996 UEFA European Championship at the stadium. Our thoughts are with the Royal Family, HM The Queen and our President HRH The Duke of Cambridge.”
Prince Philip, The Duke of Edinburgh died on April 9th 2021 at Windsor Castle.
