A royal residence reveals new way to display The King’s cypher

When King Charles III began his reign there was talk of how many items will need to be updated with his new cypher. But one place has been updated that was never mentioned: a royal garden!

Hillsborough Castle and Gardens in Northern Ireland announced on Twitter that it has begun the installation process in it’s north forecourt. Grass has been carefully removed and it appears the cypher will be in flowers.

King Charles III’s cypher is a “C” for Charles, an “R” interlocks and stands for “Rex”, Latin for “King.” Within the “R” is the Roman Numeral “III” for his regnal number. Atop the letters is a Tudor crown. The King chose this design from the ten ideas presented to him by the Royal College of Arms. In Scotland, the cypher is the same, except the Tudor Crown is replaced with the Crown of Scotland.

Just like when Queen Elizabeth II began her reign, King Charles III’s cypher will be incorporated as needed. When uniforms or equipment need replacing or royal documents are drafted, that is when King Charles’s cypher will begin to appear.

Hillsborough Castle and Gardens began as a family home in the County Down countryside. Today, it is the official residence of the Secretary of State of Northern Ireland. It also serves as a royal residence whenever a member of the Royal Family visits Northern Ireland.
