A jewel of queens that is now a favourite of a queen in waiting

The Norwegian Royal Family may not have the largest jewellery vault in Europe but they do have several historic pieces. Crown Princess Mette-Marit regularly wears one of the family’s most historic brooches that originally belonged to the first modern Queen of Norway.

Queen Maud’s Aquamarine Brooch features a large rectangular faceted aquamarine that is lighter in colour. It is surrounded by diamonds set in a twisted ribbon-esque design. The design is typical of the late 1890s and early 1900s.

Queen Maud wore the brooch in 1937 for the baptism of the future King Harald V of Norway, her only grandson.

The then-Crown Princess Sonja wore the large aquamarine brooch in 1969 when she welcomed her husband’s near relations, the British Royal Family, on holiday in Norway.

Crown Princess Mette-Marit first wore Queen Maud’s aquamarine brooch in January 2012 and for a very important event. She wore it with her Diamond Daisy Bandeau Tiara, as well as Crown Princess Martha’s Silver Wedding earrings, for Queen Margrethe of Denmark’s Ruby Jubilee banquet.

She also wore it in 2016 for an official portrait to mark King Harald’s Silver Jubilee.

The Crown Princess will also wear the brooch for daytime events, including a 2013 inauguration event for King Willem-Alexander of the Netherlands.

Crown Princess Mette-Marit has been the sole wearer of Queen Maud’s brooch since 2012.
