Prince Nicolas of Sweden turns five

Sweden’s Prince Nicolas is celebrating his fifth birthday today in Florida with his family. To mark the special day, his mother, Princess Madeleine, revealed a new photo of her only son on her Instagram account.

The Princess wrote on Instagram, “Happy Birthday to the most kindhearted brother and sweetest son! We love YOU!!”

Prince Nicolas Paul Gustaf of Sweden, Duke of Ångermanland, was born in Danderyd Hospital in Danderyd, Sweden, on 15 June 2015 – just two days after his parents and sister, Princess Leonore attended the wedding of his uncle, Prince Carl Philip to Sofia Hellqvist (now Princess Sofia).

Nicolas was christened in the family’s antique christening gown (first worn in 1906) on 11 October 2015 in the Royal Chapel of Drottningholm Palace. His godparents are his maternal uncle, Prince Carl Philip; paternal aunt, Natascha Abensberg und Traun; paternal uncle, Henry d’Abo; maternal cousin, Gustaf Magnuson; and friends of his parents, Katarina von Horn and Marco Wajselfisz.

Prince Nicolas has two sisters – one older and one younger. Princess Leonore was born on 20 February 2014 in New York City, and Princess Adrienne was born on 9 March 2018 in the same hospital as Nicolas.

As ninth in line to the Swedish throne, Nicolas was the first grandson and third grandchild of King Carl XVI Gustaf and Queen Silvia of Sweden.

He was a member of the Royal House and held the style of Royal Highness until October 2019 when his grandfather revoked the style and position in the Royal House of the children of Princess Madeleine and Chris O’Neill and Prince Carl Philip and Princess Sofia. The only grandchildren who retained their Royal Highness style and position in the Royal House were the two children of Crown Princess Victoria and Prince Daniel – Princess Estelle and Prince Oscar – as they are in the direct line of succession as the children of the future queen.

Nicolas, his siblings and his cousins through Prince Carl Philip retain their positions in the Royal Family.
