Prince Carl Philip joins board of the Swedish National Museum’s Friends

Prince Carl Philip of Sweden has attended his first meeting of the Swedish National Museum`s Friend`s Board. The prince was elected to be a new member of the board earlier this month.

The prince has long been involved in the association and has, on several occasions, had both official and private meetings with them. In 2019, Prince Carl Philip handed out the Young Artisans Scholarship at a ceremony at the National Museum. The scholarship then went to the ceramicist, Alexander Tallén. The scholarship is worth 100.000 Swedish crown and is awarded by the Bengt Julin’s fund, which is part of the National Museum’s Friends Association.

The Swedish Royal Family also has long links of supporting the association. King Carl XVI Gustaf and Queen Silvia attended the association’s annual meeting in 2014. The annual meeting in 1971 was held at the Royal Library at Stockholm Palace when Gustaf VI Adolf was involved in supporting their work. In 2017, the association gave a port dish as a gift to Crown Princess Victoria, which today hangs at Gripsholm Castle.

The Swedish National Museum`s Friends was founded in 1911 by the then Crown Prince Gustav, later King Gustav VI Adolf, with the aim of supporting the National Museum. Today, the association works to spread knowledge about and increase interest in the National Museum and its collections. Friends of the National Museum also buy art objects which are handed over as gifts to the National Museum. The association also contributes to the museum’s own purchase of art objects. The Friends of the National Museum Association is one of the country’s largest museum associations.

It also has a rich programme of screenings, lectures and travels as well as its own membership magazine. The association is one of Sweden’s largest museum associations and has about 4,000 members. The King Gustav VI Adolf fund was founded in 1974 and aims to contribute to the purchase of valuable older art and crafts for the National Museum’s collections.
