Prince Carl Philip and Princess Sofia of Sweden stepped in for the COVID positive Crown Princess Victoria and Prince Daniel last night at the memorial service for the coronavirus victims.
The memorial service, initiated by King Carl XVI Gustaf, was held at the Royal Chapel of Drottningholm Palace with the King, Queen Silvia, Princess Christina and Tord Magnuson joining the Prince Couple. The ceremony was organised to honour those who died from the virus and took place on the first anniversary of the first death from COVID-19 in Sweden.
SVT 1 broadcast the service live.
The King read from Psalm 139 while his sister, Princess Christina, and Prince Carl Philip read prayers and lit candles. The King, Queen, Tord Magnuson – the husband of Princess Christina – and Princess Sofia also lit candles in memory of the victims.
This is one of Princess Sofia’s last engagements before she goes on maternity leave; she is due to give birth to her third child in the coming weeks.
It had been announced on Thursday morning that Crown Princess Victoria and Prince Daniel had tested positive for COVID-19 and were quarantined at home with their two children, Princess Estelle and Prince Oscar.
The Royal Court announced: “Their Royal Highnesses The Crown Princess and Prince Daniel isolated themselves after the Crown Princess experienced cold symptoms. Today, the Crown Princess Couple tested positive for COVID-19.
“The Crown Princess and Prince Daniel are doing well under the circumstances with only mild symptoms. Immediately after the symptoms of illness appeared, The Crown Princess, Prince Daniel, Princess Estelle and Prince Oscar were quarantined at home.
“Contact tracing is initiated under the supervision of the Physician to His Majesty The King.”
As a result, Victoria’s Name Day celebration that was due to take place today is now cancelled.
