Princess Leonore of Sweden, Duchess of Gotland, is celebrating her fourth birthday today with her family in Stockholm. She is the older child and only daughter of Princess Madeleine of Sweden and her husband, Christopher O’Neill.
As is a tradition in the Swedish Royal Family, new photos of the Princess, wearing a Marie-Chantal silk dress (the clothing brand by Crown Princess Marie-Chantal of Greece), have been released in celebration of her birthday. The two photos were taken by Erika Gerdemark in the family room of their home in Stockholm.
Princess Madeleine also made a post on her Facebook page for Leonore’s birthday. In it, she said, “Happy 4th Birthday to our sweet Leonore!”
Usually, the Swedish Royal Family releases new images of members of their family on the morning of his or her birthday. However, as the funeral of His Royal Highness Prince Henrik of Denmark was due to take place this morning, the pictures were held until after the service. The Prince died at the age of 83 in the late evening of 13 February peacefully in his sleep at Fredensborg Palace with his wife, Queen Margrethe and two sons: Crown Prince Frederik and Prince Joachim at his side. His private funeral service was held this morning at 11 am local Danish time with only close family and friends in attendance at Christiansborg Palace Church.
On 20 February 2014, Princess Leonore Lilian Maria was born at the Weill Cornell Medical Centre in New York City making her a dual citizen of both Sweden and the United States.
Leonore was christened on the first anniversary of the wedding of her parents on 8 June 2014 in the Royal Chapel of Drottningholm Palace. Her godparents were Crown Princess Victoria, her maternal aunt; Tatjana d’abi, her paternal aunt; Count Ernst Abensperg und Traun, her paternal uncle by marriage; Patrick Sommerlath, her maternal cousin; Alice Bamford, a friend of her parents; and Louise Gottlieb, another friend of her parents.
The second grandchild and younger granddaughter of King Carl XVI Gustaf and Queen Silvia of Sweden has one younger brother, two-year-old Prince Nicolas, who will turn three in June. Leonore and Nicolas will be joined by a younger sibling sometime next month.
