Crown Princess Victoria hands out prestigious awards

The Royal Swedish Academy of Letters, History and Antiquities was founded by Queen Lovisa Ulrika in 1753. The Academy’s main purpose is to promote and fund research in the humanities and social sciences as well as cultural environmental care. On March 21st 2022, Crown Princess Victoria of Sweden attended their annual celebration in Stockholm.

The gathering and subsequent dinner were held at “The House of Swedish Knights” in Stockholm. The anniversary ceremony began when the academy’s president, Professor Peter Gillgren, opened the gathering with a welcome speech. Secretary Karin Helander presented parts of the annual report and music was performed by the Little Academy’s trumpet ensemble.

Crown Princess Victoria was the very first Honorary Member ever in the The Royal Swedish Academy of Letters, History and Antiquities.

During the ceremony, the Crown Princess handed out on behalf of her father, King Carl XVI Gustaf, the academy`s medals and scholarships. Prizes for deserving scientific work were awarded to four younger researchers for work published in the last two years. The prize money is 50,000 Swedish crowns for each one.

The Academy’s largest prize “Gad Rausing’s prize for outstanding humanities research” in 2022 was awarded to Marie-Louise Bech Nosch, professor of history at the University of Copenhagen. Marie-Louise Bech Nosch is awarded the prize for her innovative research in ancient history. Her research on the possibilities of the textile material has led to a completely new and flourishing field of research.

Prizes for commendable teaching in the school system was awarded to three teachers in humanities and social sciences. The prize has been awarded since 1995 and the purpose is to draw attention to the important role of these teachers. The academy also awarded six scholarships with a total of 425,000 Swedish crowns.
