Crown Princess Victoria and Prince Daniel celebrate key milestone for the judicial system

Crown Princess Victoria and Prince Daniel of Sweden took part in an event celebrating the 50th anniversary of the Gothenburg Court of Appeals.

On Thursday, 20 October, the couple received a tour of the facility and got a chance to chat with members of the court, as well as staff and other personnel.

They then participated in a ceremony organised by the institution to celebrate its half-century anniversary.

The Gothenburg Court of Appeals is only one of four such entities present on the Swedish territory – the other three are located in the capital Stockholm and the cities of Jönköping and Sundsvall.

A Court of Appeals is an internal part of the country’s judicial system. They hear cases that have been appealed but on which the lower administrative court has already made a ruling.

They mainly deal with civil litigation, where they hear cases between people and authority or between a company and an authority.

The Gothenburg Court of Appeals was inaugurated on 11 October 1972 by then-Crown Prince Carl Gustaf, now King Carl XVI Gustaf, so it was an especially touching tribute that it was his daughter, now Crown Princess, to celebrate their milestone.

Together with the current President of the Court, Mr Dag Stegeland, Crown Princess Victoria and Prince Daniel also got a chance to take a look at pictures from the inauguration that the institution had preserved in its archives.

Crown Princess Victoria is a stable presence in all important events concerning the institutional life of the country. Most recently, she was a part of the Council of State that the King called to ratify the government change following the country’s recent parliamentary elections on 11 September, which saw a significant surge in seats for the right-wing coalition.
