Chris O’Neill, husband of Princess Madeleine, owes too much tax – his holiday home may be sold at auction

Earlier this month, Royal Central wrote about Princess Madeleine’s husband, Chris O’Neill, and the recent criticism he faced. Now it has been revealed by the Swedish newspaper Expressen that O’Neill owes hundreds of thousands of Swedish kronor in taxes on his US properties in Florida and New York.

This is not the first time the Princess’s husband has owed money to the US authorities. In 2015, O’Neill created headlines for his late payment of property tax for a Florida holiday home and the couple’s former apartment in New York. Last year, he owed more than 330,000 Swedish kronor, equivalent to $39,000 or about €35,000. This sum he paid to the authorities two months in overtime.

Now, he owes money again. According to Expressen, they have access to documents claiming that O’Neill owes 354,000 Swedish kroner in taxes. He received the bill from the US authorities in November 2016, and it expired on 31 March this year without being paid.

In the worst case scenario, it is possible that O’Neill’s Florida property will be auctioned to gain the money he owes. If the Princess’s husband does not pay soon, the auction will be held next month on 31 May. Chris O’Neill has not commented yet; the Swedish Royal Court has stated that they do not wish to comment on O’Neill’s private business.

It has recently become known that the economy of the Princess’s husband has weakened in recent years. Earlier this year, the accounts of his company were published, which showed that the company went with a loss of €47,000 or £40,000. O’Neill’s British company, Wilton Payments, offers payment solutions for businesses.

In a previous interview with the Swedish tabloid Aftonbladet, Chris O’Neill stated that he took full responsibility for the previously delayed payments. “My family and I have got an accountant and a lawyer to advise us on the properties and shares we own,” he said. “Therefore, I, and I alone, are responsible for paying all bills and property taxes. I take full responsibility for late payment of property tax,” he told the newspaper last year.
