Why Spain’s queen might just have a hidden message in her latest fashion pick

Queen Letizia was in spring colours for the start of the Spanish State Visit to the Netherlands. But the colour she chose, bright green, also has another meaning for some supporters of the Spanish royal family.

The colour green has been seen as a sign of support for the monarchy for decades now. In Spanish, it is ‘verde’ which is taken to mean ”Viva el Rey de Espana’.

Wearing green was a symbol of backing the royals and the Spanish Monarchy which was restored under King Juan Carlos in 1975. Sometimes, green ties or accessories would be chosen as a tacit sign of support before the restoration.

Queen Letizia wore a green tweed effect dress with draped sleeves from Moises Nieto with a fawn coloured headpiece by Balel. As the Dutch skies opened for part of the official start to the State Visit, the Spanish queen added a beige cape trimmed with fake fur.

Letizia and her husband, King Felipe, officially began their State Visit to the Netherlands on April 17th 2024 when they were welcomed in Dam Square by King Wllem-Alexander and Queen Maxima.

The ceremony included the playing of both the Spanish and the Dutch national anthems as well as an inspection of the guard by King Felipe and King Willem-Alexander.

The King and Queen of Spain also laid a wreath at the National Monument and observed a one minute silence in tribute to all those who have given their lives for their country.

The royal party also chatted with some of the Spanish people in the crowds waiting to see them. On the eve of the official start to the visit, King Felipe and Queen Letizia had headed from the airport on arrival to a meeting of Spanish people living in Amsterdam.

The first day of the State Visit will end with a State Banquet which will be hosted by the King and Queen of the Netherlands. For the first time, their eldest daughter and heir to the throne, Princess Catharina-Amalia, will attend this gala event.
