King Felipe VI has held a formal meeting with the country’s Prime Minister for the first time since news of the exile of former monarch, Juan Carlos, broke.
The two men had an audience at the Marivent Palace in Mallorca where Felipe VI is spending ten days with his family.
Spain’s king usually holds a meeting with the Prime Minister during the royal stay in Mallorca but this year’s encounter is being watched more closely as the men haven’t been seen together since the controversy about the departure of Juan Carlos which was announced on August 3rd 2020.
The public appearance was calm and quiet, as to be expected, with Felipe VI and Pedro Sanchez posing briefly for photographers on the steps of Marivent. Both men wore masks with the Prime Minister, as he has done previously, opting for a version bearing a small Spanish flag on it.
In recent weeks, Pedro Sanchez has commented on the situation surround King Juan Carlos who is embroiled in allegations of corruption. As claims were made that the former monarch had hidden money that came to him via a rail contract in Swiss bank accounts, the Spanish Prime Minister said publicly that such allegations were ”disturbing”. Pedro Sanchez, leader of the PSOE, is in a coalition government with Unidas Podemos who have previously called for a public debate on replacing Spain’s monarchy with a republic.
King Felipe, Queen Letizia and their two daughters, Princess Leonor and Infanta Sofia, arrived in Mallorca on August 7th 2020 and will stay for ten days. They have already carried out two public engagements and are set to make further appearances during their time on the island.
