King Felipe and Queen Letizia open International Contemporary Art Fair

King Felipe and Queen Letizia of Spain have attended the opening of ARCOMadrid, Spain’s International Contemporary Art Fair, by embarking on a tour of the halls.

They were also welcomed by the First Lady of Argentina, Fabiola Yáñez, and the Argentine Republic’s Ambassador to Spain, before commencing their journey through “Never the Same,” the section featuring Latin American galleries.

ARCOMadrid has been one of the main platforms in the contemporary art market since its creation and it is celebrating its 42nd edition in 2023 with the Mediterranean as its central theme.

The King and Queen of Spain also met the winners of the Award for Collecting bestowed by the ARCO Foundation for their Latin American Private Collection and Collegium. Furthermore, King Felipe and Queen Letizia spent time chatting with the members of the ARCO Foundation’s Advisory Council.

In addition, the King and Queen held a brief meeting with the representatives of the RTVE Corporation and director of the Cabinet of the Presidency.

During this year’s event, the King and Queen were accompanied by a multitude of distinguished guests, including the president of the Executive Committee of IFEMA Madrid, the Spanish Minister of Interior, the president of the Madrid Community Assembly, the mayor of Madrid and the president of the Governing Board of IFEMA Madrid.

The theme for ARCOMadrid 2023 is “The Mediterranean: A Round Sea”. This program explores the art scenes of countries bordering the Mediterranean Sea. This year, Spanish galleries make up 34% of the fair, with a total of 71 galleries. The international segment comprises of 140 galleries with Latin American galleries, particularly from Argentina, Brazil, Mexico, and Peru. A total of 211 galleries from 36 countries are participating in ARCOMadrid 2023.
