Members of the Spanish Royal Family hosted Her Majesty Margareta, Custodian of the Crown of Romania and her husband, Prince Radu for lunch at their home at Zarzuela Palace on Monday, 28 May at noon. Casa Real released two photos from the private meal on their website.
The Romanian royal couple is in Spain for a five-day visit that has included a visit by Her Majesty to the Spanish Red Cross and the Spanish Olympic Committee. Prince Radu has attended events at the Madrid Book Fair and the Spanish Paralympic Committee. They arrived in Madrid on 26 May and first visited the Romanian pavilion at a book fair where Margareta gave a lecture on “The Crown and Modern Romania”. They also attended a gala concert in honour of the opening of the International Book Fair 2018 – which Romania is a guest of honour.
Those in attendance from the Spanish Royal Family at the lunch were Their Majesties King Felipe, Queen Letizia, King Juan Carlos and Queen Sofía. Juan Carlos was pictured in a wheelchair assumably due to his surgery on his right knee at the beginning of April.
King Juan Carlos, who had been walking with a cane, had surgery on his right knee on 7 April at the private Sanitas La Moraleja University Clinic in the afternoon in Madrid. This was the 15th surgery he had undergone with the first being on his appendix when he was a child.
The hospital said the 90-minute surgery was successful saying it “has been developed with total normality and the result has been fully satisfactory.” A specialist in Orthopedic Surgery and Traumatology oversaw the procedure. He remained in ICU for 24 hours as a precaution, and he was released on 10 April to recover at Zarzuela Palace.
