Princess Amalia to undertake first royal tour

The Princess of Orange is poised to undertake her first official royal tour early next year when she accompanies her parents to the Caribbean parts of the kingdom of the Netherlands.

The Royal House of the Netherlands announced the news on 1 September 2022, revealing that Princess Catharina-Amalia will join King Willem-Alexander and Queen Máxima in February 2023 for a tour of Aruba, Curaçao, Sint Maarten, Bonaire, Sint Eustatius and Saba.

The Royal House said that Princess Amalia is joining her parents to “get to know the countries” that make up the Caribbean part of the kingdom of the Netherlands.

Princess Amalia will not receive part of her mandated allowance during this tour, having renounced her rights to it ahead of her 18th birthday last year, saying that with the financial status of most students and the ongoing economic crisis, she does not plan to use any official funds until she is ready to carry out engagements on behalf of her father.

“I find that uncomfortable as long as I can offer little in return and other students are having such a hard time,” Princess Amalia wrote at the time in a letter to the Prime Minister ahead of her birthday in December 2021.

From her 18th birthday, she is entitled to a seat on the Council of State and Advisory Division and can rule without a regent should her father be unable to carry out his duties as monarch. According to the Dutch Royal Family’s website, however, Princess Amalia’s focus over the next few years will be her education.

The royal family’s website reads: “If her studies allow it, in her capacity as Princess of Orange, she will participate in Prinsjesdag and visits and receptions that contribute to her future role as head of state. This also applies to her presence at King’s Day and the photo sessions with the royal family.”

The royal court also announced that the tour is being planned with Princess Amalia’s studies in mind—the future queen begins her studies at the University of Amsterdam this month—saying, “The travel period fits within the curriculum of the study.”

Princess Amalia is studying for a bachelor’s degree in Politics, Psychology, Law and Economics.

Further details on the family’s Caribbean tour will be announced later.
