The Crown Prince and Princess of Norway meet environment youth panel

The Crown Prince and Crown Princess of Norway have invited the environment-panel of children aged 11 to 15 to the Skaugum Estate to hear more about their commitment to caring for nature and the planet and fighting climate change.

The Children’s Climate Panel consists of eight children from all over Norway, who pass on children’s and young people’s opinions to politicians and decision makers. This weekend, they have been gathered physically for the first time since they started their work in the new year. Their task is to ensure that children are heard in matters concerning climate and the environment.

Crown Princess Mette-Marit and Crown Prince Haakon welcomed the young people to the Skaugum Estate and everyone around the table spoke briefly about themselves and why they have chosen to get involved in climate and the environment.

The children presented the Children’s Climate Report to the Crown Prince and Crown Princess, which the panel publishes annually, the last in advance of participation in the UN climate conference in Glasgow, from 31 October to 13 November 2021. The report is entitled “The biggest issue of our time – children’s responsibility?” and clearly shows that children are concerned about climate change and nature.

In a conversation with the Crown Prince and Crown Princess, the children showed their concerns about justice across national borders and their belief that those who live in a rich country like Norway have an extra responsibility. They also spoke of how everyone can do a little even if no one can do everything. The children said they were willing to make an effort in their lives.

Following the meeting one of the members of the council told the press: “This was completely different from talking to politicians. The Crown Prince and Crown Princess were much more interested in talking to us. Everything was perfect. We clearly conveyed our message”.
