The King of the Netherlands jokes he’s ”too Dutch”

The King of the Netherlands has joked that he is ”too Dutch” after his good manners left him waiting at an important event.

King Willem-Alexander was among the guests of honour at a reception in Paris on the eve of the Olympic Games.

However, the first man to rule the Netherlands for over a century got there ten minutes early and had to hang about on the red carpet making small talk as his hosts made their way to him.

As he realised his mistake, he looked at his watched and joked ”I’m too Dutch” before chatting happily with other officials outside the Louvre where the reception took place. The moment was caught by Spanish channel, Diario AS, and shared by royal watchers on social media including @ChristinsQueens.

He was soon greeted by Thomas Bach, the President of the International Olympic Committee.

The King of the Netherlands joined the King and Queen of the Belgians, the King and Queen of Spain and the King and Queen of Denmark at the reception.

The Grand Duke and Duchess of Luxembourg and Prince Albert and Princess Charlene of Monaco were also present.

The reception was held on the eve of the opening ceremony of the Paris Olympics which will also be attended by royalty from around the world.

However, King Willem-Alexander will be checking his watch before getting in his car, just in case he ends up being ”too Dutch” all over again.
