King Willem-Alexander and Queen Maxima lead commemorations on Remembrance Day in the Netherlands

The King and Queen of the Netherlands joined Remembrance Day commemorations in Amsterdam.

King Willem-Alexander and Queen Maxima laid a wreath as part of a solemn ceremony in Dam Square on May 4 as hundreds of thousands of people around the Netherlands took part in acts of remembrancce.

At 8pm, the royals joined their fellow citizens in a two minute silence to remember all those who have been killed in conflict.

Commemorations took place around the Netherlands at the same time.

Earlier, King Willem-Alexander and Queen Maxima took part in a service of commemoration at the Nieuwe Kerk in Amsterdam.

King Willem-Alexander’s aunt, Princess Margriet, travelled to Canada to pay tribute to the country’s soldiers who died while freeing the Netherlands.

Along with her husband, Pieter van Vollenhoven, Princess Margriet took part in a ceremony at the Holten Canadian Cemetery where they remembered the many who fell in the liberation of the north and east of the Netherlands.

Princess Margriet was born in Canada as the Dutch royal family lived there during World War Two when the Nazis occupied the Netherlands.
