Prince Albert of Monaco releases statement on US withdrawal from Paris agreement

Following President Trump’s decision to withdraw from the Paris Climate agreement Prince Albert of Monaco has released a statement.

President Trump announced that the US would withdraw from the agreement, which was signed by 195 countries. President Trump’s decision to withdraw will hamper efforts to fight global warming. President Trump defended his decision to do so by arguing that it put unfair environmental standards on American businesses and workers. He called it a “draconian” international deal and that he was “elected to represent the citizens of Pittsburgh, not Paris.”

The statement, which can be read in full below, highlighted the Prince’s thoughts on the decision to withdraw from the agreement. He said that it “represents a very serious error of judgement for our planet.” As well as that, he highlighted how it “weakens American’s global leadership.”

The Prince also emphasised Monaco’s “commitment to the fight against climate change” and noted the countries “ambitious targets which exceed those set out in the Paris agreement.”

Prince Albert’s condemnation of the decision joins a long list of political leaders, businesses executives and environmentalists from all around the globe who have also attacked the decision to withdraw from the agreement. Despite the condemnation and worldwide disapproval, the move is thought to have support from members of his Republican party.

FULL STATEMENT:

“This decision represents a very serious error of judgment for our planet and for future generations. It also weakens America’s global leadership and compromises the country’s own economic interests by underestimating the growth prospects offered by a low-carbon economy based on technological innovation.

“I want to believe that the states, the people and cities in American states which are already engaged in a virtuous cycle of transformation and those who understand the importance of this for future generations, will continue their efforts to promote low-carbon, sustainable and resilient economic growth.

“More than ever, the Principality of Monaco stands by its commitment to the fight against climate change with ambitious targets which exceed those set out in the Paris Agreement. I call upon all nations of the world, signatories to this Agreement, to continue and confirm their commitments in support of a cause that affects the preservation of the Earth and of humanity.”
