Grand Duchess Maria Teresa to undergo knee surgery

Grand Duchess Maria Teresa of Luxembourg, 63, is set to undergo knee surgery after an injury on the advice of her doctors.

The Marshall of the Court made the announcement today adding that Her Royal Highness will not be able to undertake royal duties for several weeks during her recovery.

The King and Queen of the Belgians are due to undertake a state visit to Luxembourg later this month from 15 to 17 October, and the Grand Duchess’s participation is up in the air as it is not known if her knee will have healed enough for her to be able to participate.

The Court said the surgery would take place “as soon as possible,” adding that it would be on Tuesday, 8 October. How the Grand Duchess injured her knee is not yet known.

Maria Teresa is the wife of Grand Duke Henri, who has been on the throne since 7 October 2000 when his late father, Grand Duke Jean, abdicated. Together, they have five children and four grandchildren.
