Queen Margrethe’s grandchildren send birthday greeting

margrethe birthday

All eight grandchildren of Queen Margrethe II of Denmark came together – digitally – to record a message for her on her 80th birthday.

The video begins with her two eldest grandsons, Prince Nikolai and Prince Felix. They are the sons of her younger son Prince Joachim’s first marriage to Alexandra Manley, now Countess of Frederiksborg. His two younger children, Prince Henrik and Princess Athena, from his second marriage to Marie Cavallier, also wish their grandmother a happy birthday.

The four children of her eldest son Crown Prince Frederik, Prince Christian, Princess Isabella and twins Princess Josephine and Prince Vincent, gather on the steps of their residence with cardboard letters. They switch out the letters until it reads, “Congratulations!”

Grand celebrations had been planned for Queen Margrethe’s 80th birthday but they had to be cancelled due to the Coronavirus. There would have been a procession in a royal coach, a gala concert performance, a reception with children from all over Denmark, a gala dinner with members of the Danish Royal Family and other European royals, and a ballet performance at Tivoli Concert Hall. The cancellations haven’t stopped an outpouring of love for the birthday girl. Royals from all around Europe recorded a message for her, she was serenaded in the early hours, and she will give a speech later today.
