Queen Margrethe sees her latest artistic project brought to life

Queen Margrethe of Denmark has always been fascinated and interested in costumes and the theatre. On Tuesday this week, Her Majesty attended the start-up rehearsal for Tivoli’s upcoming ballet performance “The Snow Queen”. Queen Margrethe is the set designer and costume designer for the show.

Queen Margrethe has long been involved in the theatre industry, designing scenes and costumes for ballets and theatre pieces. She also paints and embroiders for personal artistic expression, and her pieces have been on display in several exhibitions.

The press was invited and a small mini-performance was set up by the ballet dancers which the Queen watched with great enthusiasm. During the press brief Her Majesty said: “For me, this has been a fantastic experience from the very first time, when I started with this some years ago. And this performance here I have really been very involved in, it is exciting. With good people’s help, we find the time for this, but it is busy”.

“The Snow Queen” is a play that was created two years ago in an artistic collaboration between the Danish Queen, the musician Nanna Øland Fabricius and the award-winning choreographer Yuri Possokhov. Her Majesty is the set designer and costume designer for the show. Over the years, the Queen has been behind eight ballet productions at Tivoli. In addition to “The Snow Queen”, Her Majesty has been behind “Love in the Skarn Box”, “Thumbelina”, “The Pig Boy”, “The Tin Soldier”, “Cinderella”, “The Nutcracker” and “The Lighthouse”.

Earlier this autumn it was also revealed that Queen Margrethe will provide the set and costume designs for an upcoming fantasy film released through Netflix. The Danish monarch has been employed to design the sets and costumes for an upcoming adaptation of Ehrengard from a novel by Karen Blixen. Blixen, a Danish author, is most famous for her autobiography, Out of Africa, which was adapted into a 1985 film starring Meryl Streep and Robert Redford.
