Queen Margrethe discharged from hospital after surgery

Queen Margrethe of Denmark is recuperating at the Amalienborg Palace in Copenhagen after doctors gave her the go ahead to leave hospital following extensive back surgery.

Queen Margrethe returned home over a week after the operation. Her medical team said the procedure went well and that Her Majesty could continue to recover at the palace. However, her rehabilitation programme could take several months.

Her elder son, Crown Prince Frederik, has resumed his role as regent, having returned from an official visit to India with his wife, Crown Princess Mary. In a short statement, the Royal Court said that the Crown Prince would continue his regency ”for the time being”.

The statement added that Queen Margrethe ”expresses her immense gratitude for the professional and excellent treatment” during her time in hospital.

The Royal Court announced that the Danish queen had returned home on March 2nd 2023, eight days after the surgery on February 22nd 2023.

Queen Margrethe has had several problems with her back and this latest surgery was announced several weeks before it took place.

The Danish queen is now 82 years old and has ruled for 51 years, making her the longest reigning monarch in Europe.
