Queen Margrethe attends premiere of movie based on namesake Queen

On Wednesday, the Imperial Cinema in Copenhagen was the backdrop for one of the first movie premieres that followed the forced shutdown.

Her Majesty Queen Margrethe II arrived at the theatre for the premiere of the Danish film “Margrete den Første”, which in its English version has received the title of “Margrete-Queen of the North”.

The movie focuses on the life of Queen Margrethe I, and her rule through her son Eric, as well as the plot that led her to found the Kalmar Union that reunited the Scandinavian Kingdoms under one rule for the next century.

Despite Margrethe I having lived between 1353 and 1412, the current monarch is only the second to get her name.

Queen Margrethe was welcomed at the movie premiere by Trine Dyrholm, the actress who plays the sovereign in the film, and Charlotte Sieling, who co-wrote and directed the movie.

Her Majesty’s presence was motivated by the economic contribution that the Queen Margrethe and Prince Henrik Foundation has given to the realisation of this movie.

Queen Margrethe is not new to premieres, and her love for the arts is well known. She regularly attends theatre and ballet performances, as well as art exhibitions.

She herself has designed both scenes and costumes for numerous shows, as well as made paintings with various mediums for her own enjoyment that have been featured in specific exhibitions.

But Her Majesty’s biggest success to date has been the call she received from industry giant Netflix, which has asked her for a partnership to realise the costumes and scenes for an upcoming fantasy movie, an adaptation from Ehrengard, the novel by Danish author Karen Blixen. The movie will be released on the platform in 2023.
