Princess Benedikte visits Special Olympics Sports Festival

Princess Benedikte of Denmark has attended the Special Olympics Sports Festival in the Danish city of Kolding for its closing ceremony.

Upon arrival, the Princess was given a tour of the areas that have been used during this year’s festival. A large selection of participants had turned up to welcome her, and Princess Benedikte took time to greet and talk to the participants.

Princess Benedikte was also given a tour of a brand new health centre. The health centre is for people with mental disabilities and will make their lives healthier and easier. It will also function as an educational institution.

A small ceremony was also held where the baton was solemnly passed on to Frederikshavn Municipality, which will host the next edition of the Special Olympics Sports Festival in 2024.

The royal visit was concluded with a final medal ceremony. This was for those who had participated in the handball tournament, and Princess Benedikte handed out the medals.

Her Royal Highness has been the patron of the Special Olympics Sports Festival for many years. Those will special needs have always been close to the Princess’s heart.

The Special Olympics Sports Festival is held every other year and is Denmark’s largest sporting event for athletes with developmental disabilities. Special Olympics Sports Festival is three days of sports competitions, festive social gatherings and a comprehensive health program targeted at people with disabilities. There is a participation of more than 1.200 athletes from about 100 clubs.
