Princess Athena of Denmark celebrates her seventh birthday today. As usual, the Royal Danish House released images in celebration of the young royals birthday.
The two pictures, taken by her parents, feature the seven-year-old outside, with one image showing Athena holding her mother, Princess Marie’s dog, Apple.
Princess Athena, who is the only daughter of Prince Joachim and Princess Marie, celebrated her birthday privately with her family.
The Danish monarchy releases new photos of each of Her Majesty Queen Margrethe’s grandchildren each year on their birthdays. Two years ago, three new photographs were released that had been taken by Princess Marie. It is common in the Royal Danish House to publish images taken by members of the family.
The young royal just started school in August 2017 and appeared with her parents before the press outside their home. The monarchy later released an image of Athena outside her school with her father, Prince Joachim. She is in Grade 0 at St Joseph’s Sisters School in Odrup, near the family home, where her older brother, Prince Henrik also attends.
Athena, who is tenth in line to the Danish throne, was born on 24 January 2012, in the Rigshospitalet (Copenhagen University Hospital in English) in Copenhagen, Denmark. She has two older half-brothers, Prince Nikolai (b. 1999) and Prince Felix (b. 2002) from her father’s first marriage to the now Alexandra, Countess of Frederiksborg. She has an older brother, Prince Henrik (b. 2009) from her father’s second marriage to her mother, Princess Marie.
Abiding by Danish tradition, her name was not announced until her christening on 20 May 2012 at Møgeltønder Church. This is the same church where her older brothers were also christened. There it was announced that the baby Princess would be called Athena Marguerite Françoise Marie. Her middle names honour both her maternal and paternal grandmothers and her mother.
