Prince Joachim and Princess Marie celebrate special anniversary, just months after his health scare

Prince Joachim and Princess Marie of Denmark have shared a new photo, taken by their daughter, to mark a special moment in their lives. The couple are celebrating their copper wedding anniversary with festivities coming just months after Joachim underwent emergency brain surgery.

Princess Athena, aged 8, snapped her parents on an autumn walk near their current home in Paris. The family moved there after Joachim was admitted to the prestigious Ecole Militaire for training. He now works as Denmark’s Defence Attache to France.

The prince, younger son of Queen Margrethe II, is back at his desk after his health scare earlier this year. During a stay at the Danish Royal Family’s home at Chateau de Cayx, he became unwell and was rushed to hospital where he underwent surgery for a clot on his brain. He is now recovering well.

Copper anniversaries are the first major marital milestone in Denmark and mark twelve and a half years of married life. Joachim and Marie’s wedding took place on May 24th 2008 in Møgeltønder Church.

The couple have two children together, Athena, and Prince Henrik, 11. Marie is also stepmother to Joachim’s two children from his first marriage to Alexandra, Countess of Frederiksborg.

The Danish Royal Household said that Joachim, Marie and their family intend to celebrate their copper anniversary privately.
