Denmark’s royals turn out in force for crucial football match

Denmark’s royal family turned out in force for their side’s latest match at the Euros in Copenhagen. But despite the support of two future kings and a row of princes, the Danish team ended up with another loss in what’s been a difficult campaign for them.

Crown Prince Frederik and Crown Princess Mary were joined by their eldest child, Prince Christian, and two of their nephews, Prince Nikolai and Prince Felix, for a crucial first round match in Copenhagen on June 17th 2021. The Danish side ended up losing 2-1 to Belgium.

Cheering on the Red Devils was King Philippe, who travelled to the Danish capital for the game. He watched his country’s team come from behind to seal an important win that guarantees their qualification for the knockout stage of the competition.

The Belgian and Danish royals have been high profile supporters of their national sides for the Euros with both families heading out to training grounds to back the players as they prepared for the tournament which is being played across Europe. It was originally due to take place in the summer of 2020 but was postponed because of the coronavirus pandemic.

Crown Prince Frederik spent time with the Danish side just hours before this latest match as the team faced their first game without Christian Eriksen. He is still recovering after being rushed to hospital after collapsing in Denmark’s first Euros match against Finland. His colleagues formed a defensive ring around him on the pitch as medics administered CPR and used a defibrillator after he suffered cardiac arrest. Crown Prince Frederik and Crown Princess Mary were at the game and sent their thanks to those who helped save the player immediately afterwards.

The Danish royals are likely to make an appearance at their side’s last first round match. Denmark can still qualify for the knockout stages of the contest but need other results in their group to go their way to be sure of success.
