Crown Prince Frederik and Crown Princess Mary welcomed the President of Iceland and his wife to Denmark earlier this week, with both couples taking part in events for Copenhagen 2021.
In a photo posted on the Danish Royal Family’s social media accounts, the royals are seen with the Icelandic President and First Lady at Amalienborg Palace. The photo is captioned: “In the Knights’ Hall in Frederik VIII’s Palace at Amalienborg, the Crown Prince and Crown Princess recently received His Excellency Iceland’s President Guðni Th. Jóhannesson and Mrs. Eliza Jean Reid.
“The presidential couple is visiting Denmark on the occasion of Copenhagen 2021, which is the common name for the LGBTI + events WorldPride and EuroGames, which will take place in Copenhagen on 12-22. August. Her Royal Highness the Crown Princess is the patron of the event and participates during the week in a number of events.”
In a speech at the Human Rights Conference, which has coincided with the EuroGames and WorldPride, President Jóhannesson asked, “Where’s the harm in love?”
Crown Princess Mary also gave a speech on the opening day of the conference, saying: “In Denmark, we understand that who we love or which gender identity or sexual orientation we have, should not determine whether we can participate in society – fully, equally and as a valuable part of the community.
“Knowledge and understanding are key to ensuring that LGBTI+ communities do not stand alone, in their fight for equality. And achieving equality is a fight for us all – it is a common task, as equality and equal opportunities are integral to building prosperous, inclusive and sustainable societies – societies where everyone has the chance to reach their full potential.”
Copenhagen 2021 concludes this weekend after 10 days of events, with Crown Princess Mary attending the closing events.
