Belgium’s King Albert taken to hospital

King Albert II of Belgium is being treated in hospital for dehydration.

The king, who turned 89 just a few weeks ago, was taken in for treatment after becoming unwell at home.

His wife, Queen Paola, is at his side.

His eldest son, King Philippe of the Belgians, has cancelled his planned engagement for the day to visit his father.

Doctors say that King Albert is responding well to treatment and is alert. He is expected to stay in hospital for a few more days while his condition is monitored.

Albert’s younger son, Prince Laurent, has been seen visiting his father.

King Albert ruled Belgium from 1993 until 2013 when he stepped aside in favour of King Philippe. The tenth anniversary of his abdication is on July 21st 2023.
