Sultan of Brunei’s daughter marries in lavish nine-day ceremony

Princess Azemah of Brunei, daughter of the Sultan of Brunei, has married in a lavish nine-day ceremony.

The 38-year-old Princess married her first cousin Prince Pengiran Muda Bahar, at Istana Nurul Iman Palace, the official residence of the Sultan of Brunei and the main seat of government, in mid-January.

In attendance were the Brunei Royal Family, members of the government, representatives of foreign royal families, and members of the diplomatic corps.

The festivities began on 8 January after the Sultan, Hassanal Bolkiah, gave his blessing.

The traditional service commenced with the couple’s family blessing them with coloured pieces of rice and rubbing scented oils into their hands to wish them a happy and long marriage.

After the family blessing, an Islamic wedding ceremony took place at the Omar ‘Ali Saifuddien Mosque. Prince Bahar pronounced his vows in front of an all-male group, including the Sultan, who was his daughter’s personal representative at the wedding.

A reception hosted by the Sultan followed the wedding vows. The festivities that followed lasted another eight days.

The Princess’s younger brother, Prince Mateen, shared several images from the celebrations on his Instagram account. He congratulated his sister, saying: “So happy for my dearest big sister and BJB.”

Princess Azemah is the Sultan’s fifth daughter.

Following the death of Queen Elizabeth II on 8 September 2022, the Sultan of Brunei became the longest-reigning monarch in the world, at 55 years on the throne.
