Camilla, 66, was born on 17th July 1947 at the hospital in South
London. She and the Prince of Wales received a teddy bear as a gift
during their visit with the words ‘I’m a King’s baby’ written on
it.
Prince Charles, who was born at Buckingham Palace a year later in
1948, joked that the same medical staff delivered both him and his
wife. He said in a speech “My darling wife was born here but,
amazingly, we had the same gynaecologist and the same nurse.” A
spokesperson confirmed that at the time of Charles’ birth, royal
obstetricians were based at the hospital.
The royal couple toured the hospital’s neonatal intensive care unit
which looks after around 650 seriously ill babies every year. The
Duchess took great interest in the premature babies still in their
incubators; she has five grandchildren herself.
After the visit, the parent of a 5 month old being treated at the
hospital said “Camilla was fantastic. She had Jessie in fits
of giggles and was so good with him, pulling funny faces to make
him laugh. She’s a gran herself so she’s obviously good with
babies. Jessie was born with a bowel defect last August and we’ve
been here in the unit ever since.”
?King’s College Hospital is one of the UK’s largest and busiest
teaching hospitals. It is widely recognised internationally for its
work and last year the hospital celebrated 100 years in Camberwell,
where it moved to in 1913.
