Two of the country’s most famous sports stars have been given top awards in the New Year’s Honours.

Torvill and Dean, the legendary ice skating duo who scored perfect marks in the 1984 Olympics lead the list that marks the start of 2026.

Jayne Torvill (listed under her married name of Jayne Christensen) is made a Dame for services to ice skating. Her professional partner, Christopher Dean, is knighted. They went on to enjoy successful careers after turning professional and later led the ITV hit show, Dancing on Ice.

They are two of the big sports names on this year’s list which also features an honorary damehood for Sarina Weigman, the manager of the Lionesses who claimed a second Euros title in 2025. Star players are also honoured with a CBE for Leah Williamson and an MBE for Ella Toone.

The Red Roses, who triumphed in the Rugby World Cup this year, are also recognised with Ellie Kildunne and Sadia Kabeya among those honoured, both collecting MBEs.

There are also awards for some big showbiz names with Richard Osman getting an OBE for services to broadcasting and literature – the first instalment of his hugely successful Thursday Murder Club was made into a film this year.

Ellie Goulding is made an MBE for her work in biodiversity while actor and presenter Warwick Davis is made an OBE for services to drama and charity.

Meera Syal, the award winning actor and comedian, becomes a Dame for services to drama, literature and charity. Roy Clarke, creator of some of the most famous sitcoms in British TV history, is knighted for services to entertainment.

There’s also a knighthood for Idris Elba who was well as being a film star is also an ambassador for The King’s Trust and he’s recognised for his services to Young People.

In total, 1157 people have been named on the 2025 New Year’s Honours List. There has been a focus on celebrating those who have gone above and beyond for their local communities.

Two sets of twins are honoured with two first responders from Colchester, Ryan Appleton and Dean Appleton, both getting British Empire Medals. The same award goes to sisters, Sonia Dixon and Adrienne Campbell, who are recognised for services to the aviation industry for their work as VIP liaison officers at Heathrow Airport.

The Honours are given out at New Year every year and recipients will be invited to a royal investiture in the coming year.
