The Duke of York will not take part in the public procession for the Order of the Garter ceremony at Windsor.
He will not take part in the service at St. George’s Chapel either.
Prince Andrew will, however, be present for private elements within the traditional event including the investiture of new members and the lunch held at the castle beforehand.
Royal officials described it as a ”family decision”.
It had been reported in the days before the service that both the Prince of Wales and the Duke of Cambridge had led calls behind palace doors for Andrew not to be present at the event.
The Order of the Garter is one of the oldest chivalric orders in the world. It was found in 1348 by King Edward III who was inspired by the tales of King Arthur and the knights of the round table.
The Sovereign and the Prince of Wales are always members of the Order of the Garter with numbers limited to 24 others. There are also royal knights and ladies, currently numbering eight. The Duke of York has been a Royal Knight of the Order of the Garter since 2006.
