Sweden’s Princess Leonore celebrates birthday as her mother shares a new photo on Instagram

Sweden’s Princess Leonore is celebrating her eighth birthday. To mark the occasion, her mother, Princess Madeleine, has shared a new photo of the young royal on her Instagram account.

The photo was taken of Princess Leonore outside, seemingly in Miami, with the royal in a sleeveless dress.

On her Instagram post, Princess Madeleine said: “Happy Birthday to our strong and beautiful Leonore!”

The post has garnered over 22,000 likes and many comments from well-wishers telling Leonore happy birthday.

Princess Leonore lives with her family in Miami, Florida. She is the eldest of Princess Madeleine and Christopher O’Neill’s three children.

Leonore was born in New York City and holds dual American and Swedish citizenship; as such, she is the closest American to the Swedish throne. Currently, Leonore is ninth in the line of succession. At the time of her birth, she was fifth and the “spare” to Princess Estelle’s heir to the throne.

She was the second grandchild of King Carl XVI Gustaf and Queen Silvia, and as Crown Princess Victoria and Prince Daniel only had one child at the time, Leonore was the next heir in her generation and was set to hold an important role. However, the Crown Princess Couple had a son, Prince Oscar, a few years later, and Madeleine’s older brother, Prince Carl Philip, got married. He and his wife, Princess Sofia, now have three children, which pushed Leonore down the succession line.

In October 2019, the King removed the style of Royal Highness and membership in the Royal House from his grandchildren through Prince Carl Philip and Princess Madeleine. This was done to allow the children more freedom when they grow up as they will not be expected to carry out tasks on behalf of the Royal Family.

Princess Leonore and her siblings, Prince Nicolas and Princess Adrienne, and Carl Philip’s two sons, Princes Alexander and Gabriel, lost their Royal Highness style. Carl Philip’s youngest child, Prince Julian, was the first grandchild of the monarch born without the style of Royal Highness and membership in the Royal House.
