The Prince and Princess of Wales start surprise trip to Belfast at converted church

The Princess of Wales

The Prince and Princess of Wales are visiting Belfast and they’ve started at a church that’s been made into a community hub.

William and Kate headed to the Ormeau Road as they began an afternoon in Northern Road.

Their first stop was The Commons, a church that is now a centre for the local community.

The Commons is in the converted Ballynafeigh Methodist Church and William and Kate were greeted by the Deputy First Minister, Emma Little-Pengelly and then met some of those who have been involved in the project to change the former place of worship into a venue that puts on arts events, brings the community together and also offers support to those in need, particularly women.

They went on to meet young people involved in the New Employment Opportunities Network. The organisation helps young people who are at risk of homelessness.

The Prince and Princess of Wales were talked through the in depth stages that have seen the building restored and refurbished and then developed to bring in cultural events. The Commons is also a dry bar.

As well as meeting those who have set up the space, they met others using it including a sewing group.

The space also hosts Christmas services and church ceremonies for special days.

The visit to The Commons came just after William and Kate touched down in Belfast for a string of events.

They were greeted by wellwishers as they made their way through Belfast.

Prince William stopped to take selfies with many of those waiting while Kate chatted happily to some mums and dads and their babies.
