The Prince and Princess of Wales both worked the tills at IKEA as one of its biggest stores in the UK headed into the weekend rush.

William and Kate were at the Belfast branch during a trip to Northern Ireland when they hopped on as cashiers.

The royal visit came during one of the busiest parts of the week at the store, situated just outside Belfast.

As the Friday afternoon rush began, the Prince and Princess of Wales joined some of the young people helping run the tills.

It was part of a visit to the store to see the work of New Employment Opportunities Network (NEON) which helps young people at risk of homelessness. It was set up by the Royal Foundation as part of Prince William’s Homewards project.

IKEA has brought young people on to its Belfast workforce through NEON and William and Kate met several of them as they visited the store.

Shoppers were surprised to see the heir to the throne helping out at the store as he heard about the impact of NEON and met businesses that are committed to joining it, including Howdens and Specsavers.

The visit co-incided with schools out and pupils from nearby colleges spotted William and Kate at IKEA.

It was the second stop ono a visit to Northern Ireland which began in the city centre at The Commons, a community hub set up in a former Methodist church.

The Prince and Princess of Wales met some of those involved in turning the church into a cultural hub. The Commons also provides help, including supprot looking for accommodation, to those in need, especially women.

It’s also home to a vibrant programme of cultural events and a dry bar. The royal visitors were met at The Commons by the Deputy First Minister, Emma Little-Pengelly.

There was a strong turnout to see the Prince and Princess of Wales with William and Kate chatting to many of those who had come to see them.
