The Prince of Wales wants to open up the royal palaces to the public for longer periods of time once he is on the throne. The Prince reportedly wants to turn the residences from “private spaces to public places.”
In a report by the Sunday Times, Prince Charles wants the public to have greater access to Buckingham Palace, Balmoral, Windsor Castle, Sandringham and Clarence House; all of the homes will remain as royal residences.
The Queen is aware of her heir’s plans, and Charles is said to be discussing the topic with the Duchess of Cornwall, Duke and Duchess of Cambridge and other members of the Royal Family.
A source told the Sunday Times, “The Prince wants to bring people in to connect with the institution. He recognises it needs to keep evolving, and in the modern era people want to be able to access their palaces.”
Some of the plans include allowing Buckingham Palace to remain open all year long – even while he is in residence.
Over the past two years, the opening of many of the royal residences has been delayed or cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic. This has led to financial problems for the Royal Collections Trust, which takes care of the monarchy’s art collection and gets its funds from entrance fees to the royal residences.
